Ordering a Repeat Prescription

When you order a prescription online, you can have it sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choice. This is called a nomination. This means you do not need to go to the practice to collect the prescription slip.

However you order your prescription, we require 48 hours/2 working days to process the prescription request.

  • The NHS App: The NHS App allows you to request a repeat prescription, and have them sent to a pharmacy of your choice. Find out more about the NHS App
  • Accurx: You can submit a repeat prescription request through the admin query portal
  • Local Pharmacy: Local pharmacies can send us prescription requests. Some patients have ‘virtual’ local pharmacies, which deliver straight to the patient’s door. 
  • In Person: You are welcome to drop off a request at Reception. 

Please note that if you have not ordered a specific repeat prescription in the last year, an appointment with the doctor will be needed to assess why you want to restart this medication

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The Reception team is happy to support you to complete these forms. 

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

When going abroad you can take your NHS medications with you.

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

Shared Care Agreements

We regularly accept shared care agreements for ADHD medications, and for gender-affirming hormones for trans* and gender-diverse individuals. However, a doctor must review this before it is signed, it is at the GP’s discretion. Shared care means you must have ongoing reviews (at least annually) with a CQC registered provider. 

Prescriptions from Private Healthcare Providers

We are happy to provide referrals to private healthcare providers. However, be aware that GPs are not required to prescribe medications just because they were recommended by a private specialist, and GPs are required to follow NHS guidelines and work within their competency. 

Over the Counter Prescriptions

If a medication is available over the counter, the GP will not prescribe it, as per Barnet policy. This includes medications for sunburn, vitamins and travel sickness, among others.
