Prescribing Mounjaro in Primary Care
Tirzepatide (also called Mounjaro®) is a weight loss medicine that makes you feel fuller for longer and therefore less hungry. It comes in the form of an injection which you inject yourself, once a week. Your doctor or nurse will show you how to use it.
At Woodlands Medical Practice, we are required to follow local and national guidance which states that your GP Practice can only prescribe Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes management and not solely for weight loss at this time.
We anticipate that the guidance regarding prescribing the drug in association with weight loss will change. Until this changes, we are unable to prescribe Mounjaro for those who do not meet the current guidance.
If tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is recommended, you will need to eat a balanced, reduced calorie diet and take part in physical activity regularly whilst taking the medicine.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance:
Tirzepatide is recommended for treating type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise in adults when it is insufficiently controlled only if:
- triple therapy with metformin and 2 other oral antidiabetic drugs is ineffective, not tolerated or contraindicated, and
- they have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 kg/m2 or more, and specific psychological or other medical problems associated with obesity, or
- they have a BMI of less than 35 kg/m2, and:
- insulin therapy would have significant occupational implications, or
- weight loss would benefit other significant obesity-related complications.
